Would you include something to clean a wound in a trauma kit, such as alcohol swabs or something before you might dress or pack it?

  3. @jesser007 on February 5, 2025 at 4:35 pm

Put a small garbage bag in there. Lay it on the ground first so you can put all your stuff on it. Keeps it out of the dirt. Then you have a trash bag for bloody clothes, etc. Also, throw an empty zip lock in there to store all the extra stuff you didn’t use.👍

Pardon my ignorance not being in the medical field, what is a IFAK? And what is handsome Sam’s qualifications giving us his guidance? Did I miss that? 😊

  5. @ifell3 on February 5, 2025 at 4:37 pm

If you are worried about a mouth seal, you could use the vacuum pouch with a X cut into it with your scissors.

  6. @thewayofodin4574 on February 5, 2025 at 4:37 pm

You can add tape to create pull tabs on each side of the cut you made to open the bag for some additional purchase, in the event your starting out already covered in some slippery blood/barf/poo/pee/snot/mystery-juice/etc.

I’m a wound care nurse, I use novosirgical stainless scissors, they are sub $10 and they are the best scissors I’ve used. I cut off and reapply 20 plus bandages a day and they are just the best. If you need cheap good scissors I can’t recommend them enough. Get the 5 inch or up for leverage

Mark it up 10 or 20%? You’re naive. Try 50%. I’m not being harsh on the companies. They deserve to make a profit. I am, however, being real.

Great explanation. I just spent 3 or 4 days thinking about what medical gear I should carry with me after I get my LTC. A snakestaff systems tourniquet of course but what else? What if I’m out hunting with a rifle and actually need to use a tourniquet? I’m probably going to also want some sheers to cut off my clothing. Then, i’m going to need some gauze and a bandage wrap to keep pressure….Maybe a chest seal in case it’s in my chest.

Then, I stumbled on this video and was like, "Oh, it’s called an IFAK!😄 And it also has a mylar blanket and a NPA. Nice!

Now that I know what this is I’m definitely looking forward to putting a kit everywhere and doing some practice with each of the items.

Vac sealer…or just fill up your sink with water.

  13. @nathangehman7018 on February 5, 2025 at 4:44 pm

I think one of the biggest reasons to build your own kit, at least for me, is that it ensures you are specifically aware of every piece in the kit. As someone who is not well informed on medical equipment and treatment, when I buy a kit it would give me a false sense of security. Yeah, I have all the stuff I need to save a life, but I haven’t been trained on any of it.If I’m building a kit, I at the very least am aware of every piece of equipment in the kit, and can much easier know what I need to get trained in.

I was involved in CPR on the weekend and we couldn’t do breaths due to the high amounts of bile that came up, a mask would have been beneficial, we just had to continue without the breaths

Isn’t one of the benefits of buying the individual components that you can replace expiring items individually thus economically? Also can’t you add and remove as needed?
For example a lot of IFAKs don’t have the rubber coated flexible splint. For some folks, hikers those in earthquake zones, having that item is a force multiplier for someone on the golf course probably not important.

I got the chest seal, and I’m storing it in my car, but I am wondering if the adhesive will be affected by extreme heat? I’m in Texas, so it reaches above 100 in cars sometimes.

There is no such thing as this is better than this as long as the product and the refurbished have the same function and strength will be still be usable in battle… like needles people keep saying dont use pneumothorax needle from china ehem they’re the same function and as long as you follow the use instructions it is sti be usable and reliable.. im from Canada majority of my medical supplies came from china and some from US Canada japan and Philippines

In a civilian setting and the rare event that an IFAK be used, does everyone agree that someone’s expensive IFAK be used on the injured owner, as intended in a military setting? It makes sense that if it saves that person’s life he wouldn’t care that he’s out on a $100+ IFAK. Anyone disagree?

Those Vac seal bags are not sturdy, even the good ones so I’d seal it in 2 layers, then in a heavy duty canvas bag, that way you can repack the remainder in a clean container!
I have water filtration on one, fire kit in another and medical in a third red one.
Id also add a stitch kit with antiseptic and antibiotic ointment.

I know I’m late to the party, but the ifak fanny pack is the way to go. Spacious, common, cheap and easy to edc .

  34. @TheDogsFather on February 5, 2025 at 5:07 pm

I have always done something in between the prebuilt and self built kits. I buy a good premade kit that I like the bag or container it comes in and then I remove and add things that are more in line with what I want/need to carry as well as upgrading the things that suck in prebuilt kits like shears, tweezers, tourniquets, specimen jars, and most other tools. I have yet to find a compact first aid kit that includes glucose, liquid Benadryl, and a quick access pouch or section for more immediate supplies.

Pretty bummed you described Israeli or emergency bandages as tourniquet. Don’t do that. Also he references emergency or Israeli bandages as hemostatic or clotting. Pay attention

Resealable mylar bag with tear tabs+ straight hair iron + oxygen absorbing packet works as well for packaging. Things you don’t use can be placed back into the mylar bag and resealed afterwards.

Tourniquet should NOT be in the plastic. It should be rubber banded to the outside & staged in a ready to go config.
