Right on. In the past I did a bunch of alpine style winter camping, usually solo. I haven’t been out in two decades. I’ve still got all my gear. I’m going thru it to get back out there. I did buy a big Angus 3 season copper tent for a hunt that didn’t happen. Still gotta try that out. Your vids have got me jones’n.

  2. @johnlinford1795 on February 5, 2025 at 4:39 pm

Im surprised you didnt mention the slingfin tents

The one thing no gear review channel or website is talking about though, is the disparity of brands between locations. I lived in Australia, and I live in France now. And this is not the same gear as from the US… Australia and New Zealand have their own brands, some very good like Macpac and Sea to Summit. Europe has its own brands too. And there’s many american and canadian brands that you do not or almost do not find in Europe. Hell, with Brexit, I now have trouble finding british brands like Montane… And american websites DO NOT ship to Europe. They want you to buy only the gear they sell in their european stores, if they exist. Same thing with Aussie and kiwi brands. Macpac for example has insane tents and jackets, my favorites, but you do not find them here in France… And if I’m looking at your channel, or a great website like OutdoorGearLab, more than half the stuff I’m seeing reviewed is not available in Europe… Such a shame.

  4. @BravingTheOutDoors on February 5, 2025 at 4:42 pm

Then you haven’t done your research or you’re meh at it because this is hardly… hardly… the "best" gear.

  5. @RickyBullock on February 5, 2025 at 4:43 pm

This a video about the most popular backpacking gear with thru hikers, not the best backpacking gear out today.

  6. @mikeicon8488 on February 5, 2025 at 4:45 pm

I have traded my NU25 now for a RovyVon Aurora A8. It’s lighter (17.8g naked, 23g with attachments), brighter (650 lum), and more versatile. It’s a tiny flashlight instead of a headlamp but it has many ways to attach it including a pen style clip, keyring attachment, and multiple magnetic attachment points. I clip it to my hat brim when I want to use it like a head lamp. But it also has a black light, amber lamp mode, and red flashing or stable modes. Water resistant and USB-C chargeable. Well featured and worth the switch IMO. Check it out if you haven’t already! #notSponsored

WHY THE UNGODLY AMOUNT OF BASS?!!!! you made my windows move with those bass inserts. pls stop adding unnecesarily high amount of bass….

Every video on this channel basically an ad at this point. Most of the videos on this whole site feel like ads lately.

I have an enlightened enigma and I cannot stand the pad straps. What’s wrong with them is that they are asymmetrical. They have a female clip and a male clip on the patch drop when it should have been both female and female and male and male and the opposite on the quilt meaning if you put the strap on the wrong way you wouldn’t have to flip it. I also have an REI magma quilt and I much prefer that one.

  12. @gtdmouse on February 5, 2025 at 4:52 pm

can you please review the new Peak Design outdoor bags?

  13. @Im_With_Stupid on February 5, 2025 at 4:52 pm

Those Sawyer bags have got to be the single worst design on the market. I use a pump filter these days but there was a time that I used those bags and just stopped even trying. Once I got a couple inches of water in them I just stood them up and dumped water in them from my cupped hands. Most of it missed and it still filled faster that way than trying to hold it under the water.

"Best?" Sales numbers have almost nothing to do with "best." Ask a thru-hiker, "What if money were no obstacle; what gear would you choose?" Western Mountaineering bag, Durston tent and LiteAF pack would likely be best. Stoves might not have a best, since most thru hikers probably don’t carry stoves. GG 1/8" pad. Alpha-Direct and Astroman hoodies. EE Copperfield wind jacket/pants. GG-poles. MLD Ultra food-bag. Yes, CNOC, NBS10k, Original NB-25, Bogler, Polished bowl spoon, Bic-lighter.

  16. @millsmarkchris on February 5, 2025 at 4:57 pm

I have a question for you. Since backpacks absorb water, since they typically aren’t waterproof, can it be said that it’s better to carry a backpack cover, which would shed water better? My own rudimentary backyard experiments show that my backpack can gain 20 ounces of water weight, but my backpack cover, which weighs 4 ounces, only gains 2 ounces of water, so that’s saving 14 ounces. Obviously, that would only apply for rainy trails like the AT and not so much for the CDT, but am I missing something? I’ve never seen this addressed. Thanks, love your channel.

  17. @jaredrablin96 on February 5, 2025 at 4:58 pm

Would you still want a closed foot box if you’re layering the quilt on top of a sleeping bag for colder weather?

  18. @Goruckyourself68 on February 5, 2025 at 4:59 pm

    NORDA 001. Expensive but durable

  19. @00Klingon on February 5, 2025 at 5:00 pm

If you purchase based on what’s popular, you’ll likely have an adequate time and likely avoid a bad time, yet you may be missing the best possible options which are just over the horizon. But like living on the bleeding edge, there’s risk in that.

  20. @ericb.4358 on February 5, 2025 at 5:01 pm

Hmmm… The Z Packs would NOT suit me. I like my Tarptent Notch Li. I’m SURE it would be fine in a freak snowstorm and tehDuplex would not..
And the Duplex stupid DOORS! Who signed that tent?? Where is the vestibule?? The inner tent?? Aaaarrrggghhh!

  21. @JDAM-bi1sn on February 5, 2025 at 5:02 pm

Does popularity really reflect quality& durability and comfort ? You mentioned yourself you moved away from the sleeping pad, i think that alot of choices are influenced not by how good the stuff really is but also by ppl showing of and compromising comfort to save a few grams, sure the gear is very good but there is arguably better choices depending on what its ment to withstand in your personal use, like the tent, noone would bring that to cold rainy weather in snow.
    Just some thoughts

  22. @fizzix6401 on February 5, 2025 at 5:03 pm

2023 AT NOBO here. I used the duplex tent, neoair pad (wide) as per your results. I used both EE quilts. A 20 degree Enigma with closed foot box was my cold weather quilt – a 40 degree Revelation for the majority of the trail. Didn’t really need it during the summer but it is easy to hang a leg out to be cool on warm nights. And going with nothing did not seem safe to me. Also used two packs. Winter was a Granite Gear 60L crown vic (old model) – extremely comfortable with a 30 pound load and the extra volume of winter stuff. Zpacks Arc Haul 50L for summer. Actually wore this out – straps and belt became loose and wouldnt stay tight at the end. Oh and the BRS stove. Winter base wight was about 17 pounds. Summer was 14.5 pounds. My best advice — you can do the AT no matter your specifics but to complete it all you need is tons of desire! Get on and give it a try. The worst that can happen is that you won’t finish. But it will change your life if you can. Hike On!

Marketing!! People make millions at it

  25. @FLO5ndjdjd on February 5, 2025 at 5:07 pm

Crazy how the mariposa is so popular, most people I met on my thru didn’t love it and had some kind of shoulder pain. Dumped it myself too.

  26. @darronfletcher1297 on February 5, 2025 at 5:08 pm

Not true. Thru hikers hike from town to town as fast as they can. Their montra is to imbrace the suck. If you watch their videos, they suffer a lot. True backpackers go out to enjoy themselves. They need gear that repells the suck, light weight, effecive and comfortable. Thru hikers focus on light weight to cover miles, not to enjoy camp. Backpacker enjoy the camp and the hike. Proper gear for the whole expirence. Thru hikers gear up for a totally different purpose. If you want to enjoy backpacking, get gear designed for what your goal is. I’m also not going to wear a professional swimmers swimsuit. Hahaha

  27. @andrewdixon681 on February 5, 2025 at 5:10 pm

Do you still use durston kakwa 55 over Mariposa?

  28. @Oldsparkey on February 5, 2025 at 5:10 pm

After 60 plus years of camping I finally found the best one for me. You would have a hard time on your hands if you tried to take my Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear 25 liter pack from me. To quote a famous , fables , person , it’s just right. Sadly it is not available anymore. I’m a weekday ( Not weekend ) camper and retired.

  29. @ChrisSgaraglino on February 5, 2025 at 5:10 pm

NOPE! Thru-Hiker’s gear is ONLY the best for Thru-Hikers and Thru-hikers make up less than ~0.01% of the total backpackers of the past 5 years. The best sleeping bag for a TH is not the best for a weekend warrior!

  30. @adamstewart7465 on February 5, 2025 at 5:10 pm

El Coyote quilts are pretty sweet. 900 fill, custom overstuff options. The deciding factor for me was custom orders can be received in 2 to 3 weeks instead of 2 to 3 months.

  31. @aidencrooks on February 5, 2025 at 5:10 pm

I pray you and all those who read this message would understand, repent, and believe the Gospel (good news) of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to be saved from the wrath and judgment of God Almighty that is soon to be poured out on this world and those of it. He is the perfect, sinless atonement for the sins of all those who put their faith in Him. He is the risen Lord of lords. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). Amen.

"If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).

The majority of what you’re saying is wrong.

  33. @canyonsteinzig3263 on February 5, 2025 at 5:13 pm

    such bs
    it’s all marketing
you are hyping then that’s what people buy
also garage grown?? everything there is available at independent manufacturer sites for the same price

you are making a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist

  34. @Phoenixonesix on February 5, 2025 at 5:17 pm

The best gear isn’t necessarily what a though hiker buys, but what a through hiker buys again.

  35. @techguy9023 on February 5, 2025 at 5:20 pm

Osprey Exos for me. It’s comfortable, light enough, and sturdy. I use a relatively cheap tent-North Face Storm break It’s tough but heavy. I split it up with my kids and we each have about two pounds. As they get bigger I will use my pyramid and let them use the Storm Break. Whatever works for you. We are only out a few days a year so this has worked for the last four years.

  36. @humushumus2219 on February 5, 2025 at 5:21 pm

The most skilled hikers are trailblazing the northern Taiga or tundra. That’s the real pros. 30-40 days unsupported and not a single one of these items is in the backpack.

  37. @Nihm420 on February 5, 2025 at 5:22 pm

what is that black frayed sweated you are wearing in the video?

  38. @evanshaw17 on February 5, 2025 at 5:23 pm

Gossamer gear. The best backpacks and best tents. Why didn’t you review them. They pioneered ultralight backpacking

  39. @zeal5345 on February 5, 2025 at 5:25 pm

Spend some time trying out everything you can, can’t trust these influencers.

  40. @garybrown9719 on February 5, 2025 at 5:27 pm

Olympus is probably the most underrated camera for ultra back packing

  41. @BelfourFan001 on February 5, 2025 at 5:27 pm

What’s the map app at 7:15?

  42. @JohnnoWaldmann on February 5, 2025 at 5:29 pm

Macpac is where it is at. Hardy, best fit, highest loads. On mountains, bush & Antartica.

  43. @jdsigman6747 on February 5, 2025 at 5:29 pm

Your hat?! Love it. Who makes it?

  44. @ArthurOfThePond on February 5, 2025 at 5:30 pm

The Zpacks might suffer from sunk cost fallacy. Regular hikers who paid so much for their tent will likely report to love it more than they otherwise would.

  45. @mgittler on February 5, 2025 at 5:30 pm

Your survey of thru hikers is valid, but taking sales data from Garage Grown Gear is not, IMHO. GGG is a fine store and one I use, but the range of products they stock is limited. Limited to fine products from reputable companies, to be sure, but limited nonetheless. It could well be that there are some other outstanding brands and products that they don’t sell.

  46. @dicktandy6785 on February 5, 2025 at 5:31 pm

Good intel, thank you! Have you thought of looking into sleeping bag liners? I’ve been used since the 90’s. Especially if your sleep bag is down.$$$

  47. @ReindelBohinc on February 5, 2025 at 5:31 pm

2005 Haruki Murakami black LV Speedy 30, near mint, from a pawn shop in the bay authenticated (but girl, I knew it from the pictures). I snagged it for $1000 while all the others were gone!! I hope it’s not haunted!! Haha!! Love your channel!! …Um, I bought a Dooney Florentine Nano Satchel and a medium Amelia Florentine from kislux …but wait, Kurt Geiger Kensington, Chanel 19 denim…and a Hermes Officier Birkin 30, gold togo with double, yellow swift stripe/left front and yellow interior/palladium. Look at this, so chic!!!

  48. @samuelhartsock1177 on February 5, 2025 at 5:32 pm

What sleeping pad do you prefer?

  49. @tadghsmith1457 on February 5, 2025 at 5:34 pm

This is largely BS. Just because a particular piece of gear is used by the most people it in no way indicates that that piece of gear is the best choice for YOU! Otherwise everyone would wear Nike sneakers drive Ford pickups and drink Bud Light. But they don’t. When I was on the Camino de Santiago in Spain most people were wearing hiking boots. No way I’m wearing hiking boots!

  50. @MmJAVImM on February 5, 2025 at 5:36 pm

One thing we learn from the video is that people are rich in US. Here in Spain you are lucky if you find ONE person who’s not using all Decathlon equipment
