Camping Hammocks – My Top Choices. The Hammocks I Use for Canoe Trips, Hiking and Bikepacking Trips.

Camping Hammocks – My Top Choices. The Hammocks I Use for Canoe Trips, Hiking and Bikepacking Trips.

In this video, I will be going through the pros and cons of the various hammocks that I use for canoe trips, backpacking, bushcraft camps and camping trips – from the basic models through to the top end sophisticated hammocks with full bug nets, storage and adjustable foot boxes and even a very clever lay-flat system.

I love hammock camping, the gentle sway, the higher vantage point, being off the cold damp ground and the feeling of being cradled as I drift off to sleep. In the summer, you can take full advantage of that shady breeze and in the winter you can nestle down into your cocoon using a top quilt and under quilt to keep snug. A camping solution for all year round – all you need is a couple of trees.

With so many options out there and massively varying price tags, it can be difficult to know what is good and what is not – nobody wants to feel ripped off, so hopefully, this video will help answer some questions and show you a few options that I use and can genuinely recommend.

I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

As always, great video! It was from you I first learned about the Amok Draumr. It is now one of my favorite pieces of gear!

I found the joys of hammock camping when I became homeless for 2 years. Now that I have a home, I have been thinking about part time camping and a motel stay to recharge my e-bike and phone. I’ve had my best sleep in a hammock, on my side too. While the Amok Draumr is very impressive, I prefer something closer to stealth camping. In Florida, a bug net is a must have and I really like the DD Frontline Hammock. Sliding a pad in between the layers would solve the problem I had with my pad sliding around during the night in my single layer hammock.

Fantastic stuff but I feel you’re too close to your camera and invading my room Si 😂
That Amok one looks awesome too but do they take other mattresses such as thermarest or bug agnes?

  12. @freeforester1717 on February 5, 2025 at 4:57 pm

Length of the hammock and then the structural ridgeline (an easily made add-on) is more important than many ‘features’ – comfort of the user being more important than the fripperies. ENO/Tukeke 11ft and 12’ hammocks are great cost effective hammocks (12 foot model under £6 in 03/24!), which leaves more in the budget for a decent down underquilt, which is a complete transformation when compared to sleeping on a pad . A home made half bugnet is all that’s needed in terms of protection, as the midges are attracted to you via your breath, not the smell of your feet! Several DIY ideas for making bugnets are available online. But uppermost in consideration should be having sufficient length and width of the material to afford the user a comfortable flat lay across the diagonal on the hammock. Any fool can have an uncomfortable night’s sleep!

Nice kit. I own the original DD Camping Hammock, DD 3×3 tarp and DD Travel Hammock. All brand new and unused.
I still like the Travel Hammock best. Im an old guy and im from the school of 2 is 1 and 1is none. So i like the notion of it being both a hammock and a tent, of which i cannot recall many hammock manufacturers employing. Nice to see the amok people pushing the envelope though, even if it does look a bit drafty in gale force. Love the chair aspect of it and the bug net fixture. Seemed to ‘sway’ a helluva lot i must say, and that tarp pattern…oooh!! Glad that video popped up. Enjoyed it sir, thank you

Warbonnet blackbird!!!! Hammock my favorite. and DD XL Frontline Hammock

  26. @JamiesCaniacManiac on February 5, 2025 at 5:11 pm

Amok’s are for perfect for the backyard or perfect weather & very cozy but terrible for actual backpacking.
Same with the DD I’ve had, more of a 2-3 season camp hammock.

When backpacking you need to have confidence in your gear when the weather changes quickly .
    Great review video!!

  27. @Swearengen1980 on February 5, 2025 at 5:15 pm

The Amok is interesting looking. The whole "sitting in a hammock" thing in traditional hammocks that people do, rough on the back to me. But I did have to laugh at the, "it’s like sleeping on the ground" as it’s swaying back and forth. That’s the downside of the design being turned 90 degrees, it appears far less stable.

  28. @toxophilite1953 on February 5, 2025 at 5:17 pm

One of the best videos I’ve seen on the topic of Hammocks. 👍🏻 Thank you for taking the time for setting up all these hammocks. I learned a lot.

Thanks Simon. It has been very useful.

  32. @alexmcneily on February 5, 2025 at 5:20 pm

    Good review.
I’ve made my own hammocks for 15 years and spend about 20 days each year hammock camping. This year the zipper blew out on my old standard. So I thought I’d pop for something commercial and new. I REALLY wanted to love the Amok Draumer,. If you like to fiddle with buckles, (in my view, extra and unnecessary ) extra lines and stakes . . . and you don’t get up in the middle of the night to pee. . . . especially if it has been raining. . . it might be an option for you. I bought one, demoed it for two days and returned it. Putting on and taking off shoes and getting in an out, is more unstable than traditional hammocks
I’m 6’2" and needed something large. I ended up with a Dream Hammock Sparrow in large size. It’s a design with integrated ridgeline, zip on bugnet (optional zip on solid cover). Quality from end to end. You can order with left-head/right foot configuration or vice versa, pick your model, fabric weight and design, single or double layer, ridgeline organizer, and other options.
Hammocks have made camping in the woods SOOOO much more comfortable – weather wet, hot, cold or stormy – particularly for canoe campers.
    Keep up the great videos.

    Warbonnet hammocks are the best

What about a real mayan hamaca ?

  35. @carboncubss on February 5, 2025 at 5:23 pm

Would I be correct in saying, you saved the best, uhm, sorry, your favorite for last? I currently have the DD jungle hammock for about 3 or 4 years now and was looking at the amok as I am a bigtime side sleeper and was getting ready to pull the trigger and get it for this summer. Would you say that is the most comfortable hammock you have used to date? I see Amok now makes a double hammock! Seems very inetresting.

  36. @clazzo8849 on February 5, 2025 at 5:23 pm

do you know of any hammock options for obese people lets say 200kg +

    So helpful. Thank you.

  38. @RoughWalkers on February 5, 2025 at 5:24 pm

Great video mate and very informative iv shared it about my camping community if you dont mine 😅

  39. @krimke881 on February 5, 2025 at 5:25 pm

Amok are the only one which is actually a hammock you can sleep in. Everything else made, are just a place where you lay down to have your feet above your head, having an awful time trying to sleep. Why are these idiotic hammocs produced, still? It’s completely bonkers taking hundreds of dollars for those products. Now Amok, that now has been ripped off by a few companies already, is quality! Really great comparision Simon! Fine details.

  40. @dalesmith9741 on February 5, 2025 at 5:26 pm

You guys need to push for the U.S. cottage vendors to become available in Europe. Warbonnet, Dutchware, Dream Hammock and Superior Gear are the best in the world.

  41. @TyroneOutdoors on February 5, 2025 at 5:27 pm

I bought the DD hammock with the double skin after watching this. Being able to use a light pad in the summer months seems like a game changer. Great video

  42. @nERVEcenter117 on February 5, 2025 at 5:28 pm

I’ve modified my Hennessy Explorer Asym Deluxe (Zip) with a DutchWare titanium & whoopie sling suspension. Been using it for a few years. With a simple underquilt, it’s one heck of a comfortable, complete setup. My only concern is that I might eventually want a lighter fly, I’m using Hennessy’s Hex Fly and it ain’t small or light. But the coverage is great.
