This One Feature Makes this Hammock Incredibly Special – Hennessy Ultralight Asym Hammock Review

Many know that I primarily used hammocks for over 10 years and while my preference has shifted over to tents now, many have asked about the hammock system that I personally use.

This is the Hennessy Ultralight Asym Hammock and it has a feature which makes it incredibly awesome!

Hennessy Ultralight Backpacker Hammock

Agenda Free Link : https://hennessyhammock.com/products/ultralite-backpacker-asym-zip

This is considered by most to be the most comfortable ultralight hammock on the market

Price : $230

Versions :
There is the Asym Zip and the Classic; the Asym is a side entry while the Classic is a bottom entry. These days, side entry is the standard and if you haven’t used a bottom entry before it is going to be very strange until you get accustomed to it. Bottom entry is often referred to as birthing hammocks…which is pretty funny. The Classic version is slightly less expensive at $220.

Sleeping Capacity – 1-person
Weight Capacity (lbs) – 200 pounds

Packed Size – 6 x 9 inches but larger with snake skins and stuff bag
Floor Dimensions – 100 x 47 inches
Canopy Fabric – Nylon taffeta with polyester no-see-um mesh
Rainfly Fabric – Coated silnylon

Weight :
Minimal weight is 1lb 15oz
My kit with snake skins and bag : 2lb 8oz

……
Snake Skins :

They are two long waterproof nylon tubes that you keep on the ends of the hammock or just rainfly.

When stuffed, your hammock takes on the appearance of a pet boa constrictor in your pack. You can hang the entire shelter without removing the SnakeSkins, meaning everything stays clean and dry on wet, muddy sites. When storing only your tarp, the snakeskins prevent a wet morning dew from soaking everything in your pack and allow you to pitch the tarp first, giving you a dry place to get set up when it’s raining.

Review Pros :
Very lightweight
Extremely durable
Excellent quality construction
Excellent materials
Good bug protection
All in one package – suspension, bug next, and tarp are included
Because it includes all of these components, the price is reasonable
Asymmetrical design allows for comfortable side laying and also, you can achieve a flat lay rather easily…once you learn how to set it up correctly.
Very Comfortable with the right setup – speaking of which, for the best setup with this Hennessy, pitch it tightly.
Smooth zippers – mod them for easy open and closing.
Tarp offers good protection from the elements but you have to have the right setup. This is important and I will come back to it.

Review Cons :
Won’t work with all people; taller than 6ft? It’s a no go. If you need a larger hammock Hennessy has plenty of options.
Included 42” tree straps fit trees up to 12” in diameter; You may want to upgrade to larger straps to either the 72 or 96”
Small tarp – often referred to as the Hennessy napkin – large tarps are available for purchase and should be considered in wetter and windier locations.
Tarp is asymmetrical just as the hammock is which means you have to have a perfect setup to be 100% protected from blowing rain.
Because both the hammock and the rain fly are asymmetrical, it can take time to learn how to set this up correctly and effectively. Once you have some experience, you can do this in less than 5 minutes. I want to say this, even if you have a good amount of experience under your belt, it may take some time before you get everything right.
Bug net is not removeable
You can put together less expensive kits but they may not be as strong nor as lightweight – Hennessy does have heavier hammocks that are similar which cost a fair amount less.

Review Summary :
If you are seeking one of the lightest weight hammocks on the market, this is it but the question because, will it fit you?

Is this a perfect hammock? No but there are no such things when it comes to any shelter system and that’s why it is important to consider all of the available options and make the right choice.

If didn’t already had the DD hammock, I would’ve bought this just by his review

You have bulked up in 1 year! Nice job

Would love to see a full review of a DD hammock

I’ve had a bottom entry with underpayment for 10 yrs. It’s been fine. But sadly the snake skins won’t work with attached underlay/bottom-quilt. The fly sucks. I’m looking at getting a Onewind 12×12 for more adequate wx protection.

  5. @jimbothesailor4217 on February 5, 2025 at 4:40 pm

‘It can be used as a tent’
That’s literally what it has been designed for.

  6. @gregchenoweth8963 on February 5, 2025 at 4:42 pm

Hands down I like the side entry. I purchased my first Hennessy ultralight from Amazon. It wasn’t clear whether it was side or bottom entry. It was bottom. The hammock was incredibly comfortable and light, but the bottom entry was a big pain especially for an old man who has to make frequent exits at night. The bottom entry is also difficult for fitting an underquilt. Fortunately, Amazon took the bottom entry hammock back and I purchased an ultralight side zip. So much more convenient. I also purchased kammock ultralight straps and caribeners. Combined with the snakeskins, the set up and tear down is a breeze. At 2.4lbs, I don’t even know it’s in my pack.

  7. @kevinquick7521 on February 5, 2025 at 4:43 pm

I would go with the side entry. One I was on a canoe trip in Canada. Rain flushed everyone out of one of our tents due to leakage. All of my tent mates went to other tents. Since we had a hammock just for casual use, I took the rain fly off of the tent put it over the hammock and slept in that. That was 40 years ago. I must have been on to something..

  8. @kyfisher3662 on February 5, 2025 at 4:47 pm

what do you think of the hammocks with the fly that goes fully around the hammock alowing you to use a sleeping bag around the hammock? alton goods has them if you need a example

  9. @johnuotela8270 on February 5, 2025 at 4:47 pm

Ive had both and i prefer the zip model, nice review.

I am finally sold on hammock!!!!
Snake skin is changing everything for me
Now i have to loose some weight to buy the smaller version 😂

  11. @yumuthu on February 5, 2025 at 4:49 pm

I have the bottom entry…love it, and, yes you can still sit on the hammock like a chair…

  12. @nomadmarauder-dw9re on February 5, 2025 at 4:49 pm

Big Pro for any hammock? No level ground needed. Where I live, level ground is harder to find than trees.

  13. @ScreechingSoup on February 5, 2025 at 4:49 pm

I have a Ticket to the Moon XL Hammock that has no bug net attached to it no zip either still sleep asym style, no tarp and had to buy all the other parts rope, tree huggers with Titanium toggles for the marlin spike hitch. Still with all the bits and the hammock was cheaper than any HH hammock. But saying that i still want to try the non zip version of Hennessy Asym Hammock, thought they where the best. I have a banana style hammock from DD it’s ok but nothing special.

I have always liked the idea of trying a Hennessey: it has been around a long time.

  15. @mofomby1056 on February 5, 2025 at 4:51 pm

I need the link on how to use as a tent.

  16. @alexmcneily on February 5, 2025 at 4:51 pm

I made my own hammocks and tarps for years. But this year I popped for a Dream Hammock – Sparrow model large size. They have a variety of other models. Their Darien would be closest to this one.
They are cool. You can pick the model, size, cut (head right-feet left or vice versa), material weight, color and pattern, single or double layer fabric, removable zip integrated bug net and optional removable over-cover if camping in cold. you can also buy tarps, suspension options. Ridge line organizer. Top quality in all aspects and good price.
    I use:
tree straps/marlin spike hitch and Whoopie sling suspension.
Tarp (with mosquito netting snakeskin) is separate so I can sleep under the stars amd quick deploy if rain comes. Also give a dry space to pack up when raining. Or place to hang out in rain before bedtime.
    Suspended Under-quilt.
Hammock stuffs into its own sack. And when you connect one end, the hammock streams out for easy connect to other end.
I’d give them a solid grade above Hennessy or Warbonnet. I have friends with both. I too don’t like their suspension, and I’m a

    Hammer McKim hi 👋

  18. @countywaterskayaking on February 5, 2025 at 4:55 pm

I prefer th bottom entry. I lay my sleeping bag out on the diagonal, sit down, then lift my feet in and to the side and zip myself up for the night. Im a side sleeper and ive never had issue with the bottom velcro. None of my gear is fuzzy for it to snag on. The zippers on side entries snag. They snag on the mesh, the body, or get caught up trying to close because the hammock pieces are at two different tensions. Of course with bottom entry, velcro wears out but it is super easy to replace wheras zippers are not. An under pad still works because of the diagonal sleeping position.

  19. @SebRaubenheimer on February 5, 2025 at 4:56 pm

Banging vid mate! Only advice I’d give is that you should really put the rainfly on the outside of your snakeskins– the snakeskins are to keep your sleeping area dry, and if it’s been raining cats and dogs, you wanna keep it that way by keeping your rainfly separate. It’s probably just personal preference at the end of the day though!

  20. @jeffpickel1855 on February 5, 2025 at 4:57 pm

I weigh 195. Pushing that 200 lb limit. Any recommendations on whether to stay with this size or go up? Obviously I’d love to save the weight but if I gain a few lbs I don’t want to rip through the bottom

  21. @drzrider3440 on February 5, 2025 at 4:59 pm

Id you like gathered end hammocks. You really need a Sierra Madre Research Pares hammock. Its 11 feet long. Rated for 1200 lbs and tested to it. Made of this soft silk like material. Its stretches very slightly to form fit. Best gathered end hammock I have ever owned. Way more.comfy than this one your using. Had about 50 different hammocks over the yrs. By far….and I do mean by far, the Sierra Madre Research(MSR) is hands down the most comfortable hammock(besides my haven tent) I have ever laid in.

  22. @jillmondt5398 on February 5, 2025 at 5:00 pm

Based on the cons Luke shared about bottom entry hammocks, I will not purchase one of them in the future. I have trouble just getting into a yard hammock.😂

  23. @1stRanger on February 5, 2025 at 5:00 pm

It’s worth noting that you DON’T have to buy longer straps. Hennessy offers free upgrade to whatever length you want during initial purchase.

  24. @xxBTA88 on February 5, 2025 at 5:04 pm

I just came from the video where you and your wife completely trashed hammock camping, and I think I can see why.

Hennessy Hammocks are a great entry into hammock camping. They make complete systems that are heavy, lack customization options, and are truly tailored to the beginners market. My first camping hammock was a Hennessy and it did it’s job well, but was far from good.

I know all this gear is expensive and you probably no longer have a passion for hammock camping, but if the urge ever strikes you I highly recommend an agenda free review of a Blackbird Warbonnet or a Dutch Chameleon. Both are handmade in America, but they are truly the cream of the crop for serious hammock camping. For instance a comparably equipped Chameleon would weigh about a pound less than and Hennessy ultralight, while only costing $40 more. And it’s handmade in the USA, not in a sweatshop in Asia.

  25. @williamwood6795 on February 5, 2025 at 5:04 pm

How well does the reflective mattress work? Do they offer a zip in privacy/wind break vestibule? One that swaps out with the mosquito net??

  26. @Thee-_-Outlier on February 5, 2025 at 5:05 pm

I have a onewind with birth canal lol

  27. @blackeyesforyou on February 5, 2025 at 5:05 pm

My first and present hammock is a Hennessy Expedition. Made in Canada 😎

  28. @livinlarge1247 on February 5, 2025 at 5:05 pm

Luke I think you are the only one this Millenia talking Birth Canals. I’d love to try one though.

  29. @randyang9322 on February 5, 2025 at 5:05 pm

I’ve had the Hennessy expedition asym velcro bottom entry for awhile. And you definitely got it on some of the cons of it especially when you are using under quilts, or sleeping pads or anything on the bottom that needs removing to get out of the hammock. However you can use it as a chair without having to remove the bug net. You can just sit over it. And even if it is a little bit too tight, taking of a guy line should do the trick. Now you made me thinking of making a custom side entry to mine and make it best of both worlds. 😂

  30. @Gordon-t8k on February 5, 2025 at 5:09 pm

    Thank you
Now I have the task of finding one in Canada

  31. @jlastre on February 5, 2025 at 5:10 pm

One of the reasons back in the day I never got a Hennessy was they went hard into birthing hammocks.

  32. @pedro_claro on February 5, 2025 at 5:12 pm

The Helsdon hammock is way faster to set-up, but ofc it had disadvantages. Worth looking at though

  33. @Hootyhoo-jq9vq on February 5, 2025 at 5:13 pm

Don’t be afraid of the tarp. It works. I have pounded by rain and wind blown rain and it did just fine. The priority on this model is light weight. Its hard to store gear, boots, etc under this tarp and keep it dry. There are pros and cons to everything.

  34. @andrebehar1772 on February 5, 2025 at 5:15 pm

i prefer side zip side entry for hanging around camp during the day but for camping at night on the go the bottom entry wins!

  35. @tktdog on February 5, 2025 at 5:15 pm

Side entry. I have several hammocks and they are all side entry.

  36. @livinlarge1247 on February 5, 2025 at 5:16 pm

Here’s the grit on the WB (Warbonett): warm weather yes, cold weather maybe. Many Hammock Forums & users say the Wookie bottom quilt is a bit narrow by the feet. The Superior Gear might be better for winter or a Trailhedz bottom quilt on whatever hammock bed. Hec the $24 Grand Trunk Trunk Tech. Single us not bad. But Simply Light Designs or Trailhedz you can build a cool hammock.

The Blackbird XCL I own is a very good lay, but I think it is particular to the Wookie Bottom Quilt because its lay is so diagonal.

WB also makes a bridge hammock. They are flatter but a bit tippy & heavier. The tarps do not cover them as easy.

Backpacking about a 10 foot Hummingbird ultralight or 9 foot ENO Sub 6 with a well-insulated mummy pad.

I run the Hammock Gear webbed straps around the tree & the rest Exped Slit Line Extreme (all 2.4 oz in the little stuff bag) or run a basic whoopie with tge HG tree straps.

The slotted straps will let you go to little trees without all of that wrapping, though they will wear & tear quicker than those seatbelts.

I am still very happy with my HENNESSY HAMMOCK Explorer Deluxe."2012" "Original" with Bottom velcro opening.
BUT THEN I saw a guy here on YT who told, that he had had a zipper sewn on and some holes in the bug net repaired by a private seamstress from the US. I remember going to Google Map streetview, and looking at the / her house and garage, and thought: Well, it looks quite ok !
So I contacted the lady and sent my hammock from little Denmark to somewhere in the USA. (100- 150 usd incl. shipping, I think I paid.)
She sewed two new YKK zippers with THREE sliders each, so you can access the hammock from both sides. And the entire net can be completely zipped off and down into a small storage net bag sewn into the foot end.
+ three "storage bags" for the ridgeline.
However, I still kept the "bottom opening" in the hammock.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the sweet lady’s name or city name, but she should have a big THANK YOU, from me, for a good QUALITY work ! A TOP Dollar Job.
    THANK YOU.

Have alot of hammocks (incl WB) & keep going to about the lightest with a well-insulated, quality inflatable pad (slightly shorter than I), of which I have tested many. Exped 5R, Termarest NeoAir X-Lite Womens R 5.4.

Tarp: quality sturdy Diamond Walkabout Rainfly from Yukon Outfitters for only the hammock, but better options for ground too & snow exist like the WB Minifly.

  46. @gibbokarl on February 5, 2025 at 5:33 pm

I prefer the bottom entry and use the snugpak under blanket with it perfect for me 😊 also it CAN be used as a seat and lounger as like the zip model

  47. @dennisweaver7216 on February 5, 2025 at 5:33 pm

I bought my Hennessy hammock from the man himself at a tradeshow in Las Vegas back when he first started selling them many years ago. Still using it and it works great.
It’s one of my favorite camping things.

I would love to go Hammock Camping! My hennessy hammock is about 20 yrs old and still going strong… many war wounds but still using it.
