Step one: be able to afford camera gear 😂

  2. @rg1809 on February 5, 2025 at 4:36 pm

An Eastern gray squirrel managed to die in my backyard last winter. I wasn’t in the mood to remove it to the garbage so there it lay for a couple of hours, beside a pink dogwood. Suddenly a very large brown wing appeared on the other side of the dogwood. The bird jumped a bit brining it fully into view. Big white head, powerful yellow bill, a bald eagle. It tuned its head to determine the squirrel was available for the plucking and off it went. Closest I’ve come to a bald eagle in my living room.

so you think most of your viewers can afford those thousand dollar lenses??

  12. @timothyneckles229 on February 5, 2025 at 4:52 pm

All your tips have really helped me so thanks. Especially that ISO Auto is fine when shooting wildlife which helped me so much rather then having change ISO on fly while environmental lighting changes

  13. @DJRobSunset on February 5, 2025 at 4:52 pm

I am currently trying to pick up photography as hobby and your videos take a lot of worries out of the way. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge

  14. @Danalmog-dq2di on February 5, 2025 at 4:53 pm

Good video Simon! I have a question: what do you think about the canon 7d mark 2?

  15. @mSchwippy on February 5, 2025 at 4:54 pm

I appreciate this video. I know nothing about cameras aside from "aim at object, press button." I borrowed a Rebel xsi from a friend with a 270mm lens, and just after this video im using the Tv mode, changing the lighting sources, angles, and other basic stuff. Already got a great series of pictures going. Thank you for helping me start the new hobby!

  16. @badgerfoot on February 5, 2025 at 4:55 pm

For anyone involved in this hobby; do you ever wear blaze orange when in the woods to avoid accidents with hunters? Or do you generally avoid photowalks depending on the hunting season?

  17. @philhepta7443 on February 5, 2025 at 4:56 pm

Thank you thank you thank you! This is one of the best video I’ve see so far for WL photografy! And for me, a quite beginner, it’s a masterpiece! Many thanks again! A big hug from Italy!🤩

This is the best video ever! I wanted to try wild photography (even though I do this just for fun) I got myself a lenses with autofocus because my eye fails me sometimes 🤣 that canon lens 70-300 which everyone says is a bad lenses but with the right settings I have found it very helpful anyway I thought I was a fraud because of the autofocus 🤣 turns out is the opposite! Thank you very much

  22. @mxkjpd01 on February 5, 2025 at 5:02 pm

Loved the video, Simon. Great job! Your tips and tricks are top notch and super helpful as I’m trying to get into wildlife photography. I would have never thought about buying used gear, but now I’m seriously considering MPB.

  23. @beninnotts on February 5, 2025 at 5:03 pm

Funny how you have recommended the 7D2. I literally bought a 2nd hand one 3 weeks ago. 7.5k clicks and only £367 from Carmarthen cameras and in very good condition! Paired with a mk1 100-400. Great combo for wildlife and aviation alike.

Hi Simon, I’m current shooting Aperture priority configured with an ISO min Shutter Speed. I have a button programmed so that I can changed with ISO min SS when I need to change SS. Curious to get your thoughts on this over using Shutter priority. Love your videos… you have taught me a lot!

  33. @RoyalVartist on February 5, 2025 at 5:11 pm

Stumbled across your video after getting super into penguin photographers and field researchers. Now I live in the middle of the States so no penguins unfortunately, but since I was little my mom has become quite the experienced amateur photographer.

She introduced me to photography from a super early age so were both being inspired to pick up our cameras again! Mom does more potraits of people and buildings/ urban landscape, and I do lots of common neighboorhood plant/ garden and animal shots. So we both got a lot to learn from our wide interests too!

  34. @Thehappyet on February 5, 2025 at 5:12 pm

“The odds of seeing a bald eagle in your living is quite low” thumbs up for that 😂

  35. @signature103 on February 5, 2025 at 5:12 pm

    Great tips.

One question: why 1.4x over the 2x teleconverter? Is it because you lose too much light (aperture) and the scene is too tight?

  36. @dayskatrueshot1528 on February 5, 2025 at 5:14 pm

I have a cannon rebel t6 dslr camera and three different lenses what could you suggest for a good budget lens for wildlife photography

  37. @avtaras on February 5, 2025 at 5:15 pm

Amazing video, very compact, no nonsense. Thank you!

  38. @Shakey-fg6xy on February 5, 2025 at 5:15 pm

I’ve just ordered a Nikon d500 and the Nikon 200-500, upgrading from a d5300 and a 55-200 lens. Had the opportunity to spend some money and figured this would be the next big step to upgrade my photography game. After watching this video I’m even more excited!

  39. @growlusnotneeded3251 on February 5, 2025 at 5:16 pm

Don’t forget to tell them you have about $20k in the camera and lens.

  40. @Aikisbest on February 5, 2025 at 5:18 pm

Are photo cameras going to turn into just very high quality video recorders eventually >_<

  41. @undercoverotter4277 on February 5, 2025 at 5:18 pm

    Absolutely amazing video. Thank you!

  42. @ericvaughan11 on February 5, 2025 at 5:19 pm

Great tips thanks, I just discovered a video by Andy Astbury called "ATTENTION WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS: EPIC Variable Ai Denoise Masking Workflow in latest Photoshop/ACR" if you haven’t seen this or know you could do this, then you need to watch it, brilliant. Going to change how I process and denoise my wildlife images going forward for anyone that uses PS. Also the adaptive color profile is also great new feature to try as well.

  43. @jugemujugemugokonosurikire4735 on February 5, 2025 at 5:21 pm

Is it recommended to take a recording of a scene of a bird taking off and selecting the best frame, or is it better to shoot a few photos?

  46. @trentbever1370 on February 5, 2025 at 5:24 pm

Thanks for producing great content and inspiring images, Simon. I want to get into the wildlife genre. I have nikon gear that I used for portrait work and some landscapes. I have a D7100, and I would like to go full frame, but there are many routes to take. You mentioned the D500, but is there another that you would recommend since the creation of this video? I was leaning towards the D800 or 810. Any thoughts on these?

  47. @MattH039 on February 5, 2025 at 5:27 pm

I just had an amazing trip to the mountains of Montana and realized how much I enjoyed waking up early and hiking while looking for wildlife. I am an amateur with a decent bridge camera, but realized that I could be getting much better shots.

Thank you for this video, it is exactly what I needed to continue my journey into wildlife photography!

  48. @richwalker659 on February 5, 2025 at 5:28 pm

Glad I came across you. I am quite experienced photographer and also a Canon shooter. But I can get lazy about technology so you have great reminders and tips especially the mpb 1, will definitely check that out.
